I don’t know what your first question means.
But a barcode reader is a device that attaches to your computer via USB or PS/2. All it does is read the barcode and output them as text. You have to have a software program, ready to receive the numbers, open and active.

i am using microsoft excel and im trying to get the barcode on it as well when i scan the product?
im using microsoft excel and i can scan the barcode and get the the S/N but im trying to get the actual barcode as well if you know how to that i would really appriciate it thanx for you time

To do that you’d need to scan in and store the “No” then in another cell, you need to COPY the data and format it with a BARCODE font
U need to know WHAT format the barcode is . . as there are various ones.

for product producers, bar code is outsourced services economically available by specialists.
if you do yourself, it will cost you more.
if your business is connected with groceries like thing there are lot of of ff-the-shelf services/packages are available which are dead-cheaper.

is cyan ok to use as a barcode colour on packaging, if so do you have proof?

Both 2D and 3D bar codes rely on contrast, not neccesarily color. If you print the bc on a similar color, the camera will not recognize it and you will get a read failure. Putting a cyan bc on a contrasting color or white would be fine.

Where do I get a UPC barcode for a CD or DVD?

I just answered this question in another post.
I used an awesome company called QualityUPC. The fee was .99 for one barcode. And if you buy more the prices are lower.
They email the barcode to you so you can send it to your package designer. You can also have them print labels, but i didn’t scope out the prices.
Simple.
