Did you run a speedtest?
Try one here:
speedtest.net/
If the upload and download speed are within 75% of the ISP’s claims, then I guess you are ok.
Many things affect your internet speed, so don’t go blaming your ISP like most people do.
1. Ok, so you probably don’t have a virus. Lets go to step 2.
2. Is this for a certain website, or everything? If its just for a single website, then that site might be going under maintenence, or is encountering problems, or many people are just going to it at the same time. Most sites slow down once in a while. If it is for everything, then I ask, What web browser are you using? I love internet explorer, and always use it, but I admit Mozilla firefox is much faster. If you are using internet explorer, then get firefox here:
mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
3. where is the wireless router located? Try a speedtest again, and one a few feet further. Test everywhere you use the internet. Try unpluging it and repluging it. That sometimes works.
4. Are there other people using your internet??? There could be someone(s) in a car down the street hogging your wireless. Secure it with a password only you know.
5. What time are you using the internet? At 4-8 PM, many people use the internet, which always slows it down.
(oh yeah, your temporary internet files speed up your internet connection, since it stores the information in your hard drive, rather than for you to download them again. Don’t delete them. But if you have a slow hard drive (5400 RPM or less), then you might consider deleting them. And don’t delete cookies, some sites don’t really work without them)
I hope this helps.

Dear David,
Could you please try to do this test:Local Settings
1. Check your C:Documents and Settings
- Delete the contents in Temp directory
- Delete the contents in Temporary Internet Files directory (you might want to save some cookies)
- Delete the contents in Temporary Internet FilesContent.IE5 directory
2. Do defragment
3. Delete / save some unused data to CD or anything
4. Open the Properties of My Computer:
My Computer>Properties>Advance>
>Performance-Settings>Advanced
>Virtual Memory – Change
You can set both Initial Size and Maximum Size to 2000 or 4000Mb max (recommended)
As a final note, you can always check the program that uses highest memories by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del > Processes
Hope this helps
Kind regard,
Ryonn

Most anti-virus programs’ email scanners slow down computers alot- do you have any email scanners on? Also, are both avast and adaware on the startup list? Having them both on at start up with all the other startup programs slow the computer. I run my anti-virus manually a minute or two later or when I think that I may have been invaded by something. I do leave my ZoneAlarm Pro on all the time. In general, I have read of many so- called “internet gurus” who load up their computers(to impress people) and then wonder how come their computers run so slow. Bye.

I slow down computers with just my physical presence. Yeah, I’m on here alot. My husband was a Computer Sci Prof and now he’s an IT Tech. He’s run across my type before. I’m an “abno-tech”. Which I have accepted gracefully, but I can’t use any other computer in the house. Just this little laptop that slows down too much now and then; but, if I’m going to be keeping in touch with my family and playing games, having fun, I figure it is worth putting up with.
You, however, would already know if you were an abno-tech. Because every new computer you ever got would be slower than a snail’s pace after two weeks of your using it.
That leaves your ISP and high-traffic times. My computer slows even more at certain times of the day. Like 6PM, 9AM, 4PM…when people are more likely signing on after school, after work or before work. Even though I have a wireless connection, I get slowed so much I have to reboot. So you may just be experiencing normal delays from your ISP.
I think that could be the only explanation, since you obviously know what you are doing. Have you thought of using a different internet browser? We use the UBUNTU system with Firefox/Mozilla on my computer. Internet Explorer dies with me. So does Opera. Maybe changing your browser might help.

It is difficult to troubleshooting these problems blindly.
Are the only computer using the connection or do you have a others in the office or hitchikers using your wireless hub?
Was there an upgrade/downgrade to the ISP or your network adminstrator installed a firewall.
When was the last time the hardware was rebooted?
Have you installed a sniffer on your network?
Does your wireless hub have unauthorized users?
Is your wireless connection a line of sight connection? Did something go up between the two communication points? Did the communitcation points get misaligned? Is there ice on the recievers.

well there are a lot of ways. the most i can think of is either u have a bad router, a bad wireless chip, or there could be some other thing blocking the signal. i may not be sure about this but confined spaces, metal, and other wireless things may interfer with it
