bar code scanners – how do they interface with main system?
How do bar code scanners/readers interface with main system? For example, if someone is using one at Receiving Dock to scan in items and quantities, how does this info get back to main business system? Does it Sync up with a base of some kind?

Best answer:

Yes, the scanner has special software installed in the computer system and links this to the database and into the proper zones. With out the proper software interface, the barcoder doesnt work. We use barcose scanner on all blood work at the hospital. Scan our ID, the patiends ID, the test code and then the sample. Then its automaticly sent and vailible on the chart within secounds.

    1. The device you hold in your hand to capture the bar code has a software driver for your operating system. The driver makes the scanner an input device for the operating system. This means that there are drivers for different operating systems like MacOSX and Linux. Once the driver is written for your operating system, we go to the second step.

    2. The driver package generally does the translation from bars to numbers and then makes that information available to programmers.

    3. Let’s assume for a minute that the business software in question allows/designed for integration of new devices/new functions. A programmer writes an application that connects the information from the bar code driver to the business system software.

MOst of the scanners taht are on the market actually interface through the keyboard interface. The scanner will translate the bar to the digits. Open Notepad on your Windows desktop. When you scan you will actually see the numbers that the scanner is picking up.

Don’t get scared and think that there is something magical about hand scanners. They are actually VERY easy to configure and use. I should know…I used to install POS (Point Of Sale) terminals in stores.
