Barcode payment system?
will this work ? customer store credit card information which will be encoded into 2d barcode by a program in their cell phone, then to make a payment, the merchant simply scan the barcode.
Best answer:
It definitely could work and is working today in some places. Usually it’s the customer’s information, including a special customer number that would be included in the barcode. Not the actual credit card information itself. When a customer purchases something they can simply present the barcode to the cashier, the cashier scans the barcode and the charges get applied to whatever credit card or debit card the customer has on file. However, in this type of transaction the customer would need to present some kind of ID to verify they are the legal owner of that barcode data.
A much more popular use for mobile barcodes is to send coupons to the customer via SMS. Instead of the customer having to clip coupons from the paper or other sources, the store can simply SMS them. When the customer purchases that item the store scans the barcode. This is also used for customers that are in the store. They can send a text message to a particular number defined by the store and displayed on a shelf. The coupon is instantly sent to the customer’s phone.
Finally the most popular use right now and gaining ground all the time is mobile ticketing. Customers get airline tickets, concert tickets, movie tickets etc. sent to their phone when they order online. They use the barcode to get into the venue.
Barcodes on cell phones are taking off. More and more barcode scanner manufacturers are building barcode scanners that can handle the challenges of reading barcodes off cell phone displays.
