Barcode system for my small retail business?
Barcode system for my small retail business?
I am opening a small retail store that that sells prepackaged (I sell manufacture and package), and I was wanting to have a barcode system to check out people instead of a traditional cash register.
I was wondering what all I would need to generate the barcodes, and a system to read it, check people out, print a receipt, and keep track of inventory!
I would prefer programs and systems that uses mac, but that is not a requirement!
Thanks!

Here is my suggestion, consult a programmer who can design and develop a customized POS for you.
You can use MS Access (2 gb limit database). You can use a free barcode 39 as font, which is the only free font that I come to know. Install this font to your p.c.. You’ll be needing of course a barcode scanner. Sometimes, some barcode scanners only support specific barcode fonts, just check it out. Also, you’ll be needing receipt printer printer and barcode printer.
First, design a POS and inventory database for your store.

I use Intuit’s Point of Sale program. It allows me to scan in UPC codes, or alternative codes I make myself using a Zebra label printer and software. You generate the bar code using normal alpha numeric keys, and the software “translates” them into barcode that my hand held scanner will read. I use a Dell pc and not Mac, so I can’t help you there.
