BUYING barcode for my music Album do you buy one barcode to use on all copies or?
okay if i buy a barcode for my own album to sell it in stores and online and at shows, do you buy one barcode for copies of the same album, or do you buys as many barcodes for as many copies you make if the album
cause a barcode is for one! and my cd it will be on only would sll for 12 dollars so i lost money, or if its the same one for all copies then its no big deal,,,

sorry it might be stupid for me to ask this, but i am doing it all on my own, and please don’t tell me to go to a agent or something, this is on my own

thank you

If you sell one unique album you will only need one unique number. This is known as a UPC number. Think of this as the “social security number” for your product. It uniquely identifies your product from all others in the world.

GS1.org is the governing body that allocates these numbers. As you can imagine there has to be a source of control for the allocation of numbers. Otherwise if you walked into Wal Mart and a box of tissues had the same number as a box of crackers there would be a problem. There are companies that sell what are known as shared UPC numbers but you need to be careful of these UPC numbers because many major retailers will not allow them and if your product is marked with a shared UPC they may chargeback the vendor or eliminate the product from their store.

Once you have contacted GS1.org and have a valid UPC number you can have barcode or product packaging printed with your barcode. There are very specific specifications for the printing of the barcode and a reputable printer should be used. Major retailers that have difficulty scanning a barcode because it is out of specification can again chargeback the vendor.

If you need a relatively small run of labels to affix to your product (album) you can use a service like WePrintBarcodes.com that will print rolls of barcode labels in as small of quantities of 1000. Depending on the size of the label the roll of 1000 will cost you anywhere from – .
