Can a barcode set off a security alarm when it’s not scanned?

Don’t worry, I’m not thinking about stealing or anything.

But today, a friend and I were at Borders.
After that, once we got to my house, she took a book out of her purse and said she stuffed it in and walked out.
She didn’t rip off the price sticker or scratch out the barcode, but she took off the security metal sticker thing they hide between the pages.

So, I’m just curious, can the barcode set off an alarm?

Bar codes do not set off the alarm. Stores use security stickers with a magnet in them to set off the alarm. Anything magnetic can set off the alarms which is why people set it off when they walk into a store sometimes. If you set the items on the counter at the checkout, they are deactivated, and you won’t set off the alarm.

No. Barcodes do not set of alarms. It’s magnetic stickers/strips/pins and things like that. Like the little bars on the inside of DVD cases.
But please…. don’t steal. And try to talk your friend out of doing it anymore. She won’t be that great a friend if she gets you arrested with her for stealing. And trust me… places will arrest you over as little as fifteen dollars.
