can a metal detector in malls/supermarts detect barcodes if the object is shoplifted ?
i am interested in the metal detectors mostly in india……for eg lyk in big bazzars and all…….
Best answer:
It is not looking for barcodes. It is looking for a small strip of an RFID, or metallic ID when leaving the store..These are usually placed where you cannot remove it, like inside a box or product.

The thing in malls and supermarts are not metal detectors or barcode readers.
That’s why your keys don’t set off the alarm and shoplifted goods can be detected even if the item is not in sight.
Yes, they can detect shoplifted items. That’s their primary function.

They’re not metal detectors and they don’t read barcodes. A majority of anti-theft devices detect radio frequencies reflected from tags on the item. When you purchase the item the cashier uses a pad to deactivate the tag, or sometimes with clothes removes the tag itself, so it doesn’t set off the alarm. When you steal the item, the tag sets off the alarm as it passes through the gates.

Not a Metal Detector or a Bar Code Reader, but an RFID.
Think of an RFID as a Transponder. It Responds to a Transmitter.
Read about RFID here;
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio-frequency_identification
As you exit the store, a signal is sent to the RFID placed in the product, that responds to the transmitter triggering an alarm.
If you have purchased the product, the RFID has been disabled.
