Can I reinstall XP Pro from a store bought CD thats already installed on other computers.?

Heres the deal, Im trying to fix a freinds computer. She has an older Gateway that came with XP Pro installed. It has a Microsoft sticker on the case that says XP Pro with barcode and Product Key. The XP cd i want to use i know will not pass validation because its already being used elsware. When i go to reinstall with the cd, instead of using the product key that came with it can i type the product key from the Gateway and have everything work OK.

No, because the CD knows what key it is looking for and it won’t match.

If the computer’s key is for XP Pro, and the CD is XP Pro, then yes, use her key. The key is registered with Microsoft, not the CD.

Sorry Johnny but you are completely wrong. I refurbish computers and only have three disks for all my customers, XP Home, XP Pro, and Vista.

    NO.
each software has it’s own code key for that software only.
Using someone elses code can lock up all the computers that have been used.
