Can somebody explain the Marlboro/Barcode sponsership for Ferrari?

Can somebody explain the Marlboro/Barcode sponsership for Ferrari?
I know the EU disallowed Tobacco sponsership, but can somebody give a better explanation?

Best answer:

The barcode doesn’t actually stand for anything….nor is it scannable….It just takes the place of the word “Marlboro” on the livery, or paint job as they say in America.

The rest of the livery is easily identifiable as Marlboro’s with the white engine bonnet.

However, there are three races on the schedule that still allow the word Marlboro to be on the car’s livery….China, Monaco and Bahrain….and presumably when India, Russia and Dubai all get a GP on the schedule.

It’s been going on for so long that I’m not sure who knows now. Here is one of my previous answers when I went into some detail about this, including pictures from the early 80s when it first started: uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=At2L9XXs690kILmMcTg0ARJJBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20070608135813AAAWZDQ

That’s been intriguing me too. I have speculated that it say Marlboro in barcode language?

Awesome question they were talking about it during the Aussie GP, basically Phillip Morris and Ferrari have a unique partnership. They own every inch of advertising space on the Ferrari Chassis then they in turn sell the space to other sponsors which is why the Ferrari Chassis has very little advertising compared to say Mclaren, Renault or Sauber.

Its a convenient partnership for Ferrari, they get a big check from Phillip Morris every year and dont have to bother about finding sponsors for their car.
