can stores keep track of if an item on the floor was bought and returned by its barcode?
so a theft brings up the item to the cashier and said ‘i want to return thing’ would they be able to tell that someone returned it and they got it from the floor just from that store’s sticker on something??
im not a theft, i swear haha

    Yes. There are many things that can be determined by a bar code, and also determine if any or some of the items have sold within the last month, year, and so on.
    Stores ask for the receipt for a reason, and you will never get cash without one.
    Also people who steal and do false refunds are the people who make all of the rest of us pay more and more and more for the items we pay for.
    Recently courts have been giving much higher sentences to the thieves out there, and I hope I am on the next jury, I want to give them the maximum sentence.

    the usual barcode only ids the item and model number, not the serial number.

    however, some electronics items now have scanable serial number barcodes as well, so in that case, yes.

    No. Unless they use serial numbers in addition to the regular bar codes, they will not know that the specific one you’re holding was stolen/returned. The only major exception I can think of is with high end purses and some jeans, as there are companies that give registration/serial numbers to really expensive products. For a normal store like Abercrombie or AE, though, that’s not an issue.
