Can you purchase a barcode reader or scanner that can be programmed to read any barcoding?

Can you purchase a barcode reader or scanner that can be programmed to read any barcoding?
We are getting product that has existing bar-codes. Without buying an entire system, can we purchase hand helds that can be programmed to read that existing barcode?

Best answer:

Sure…

But remember the hardware has to integrate with the software.

Remember the CueCat? It reads a number of different symbologies, but it has to talk to software….

    Kathi,

That depends on the type of barcode. There are literally hundreds of different types out there. Many barcode readers can read the most common types. However, they either have to be enabled (see your scanner’s manual) to read the others or they may not be able to read the specialty ones at all.

The first step would be to identify what type of barcode you are trying to scan. Once you know this, you can check your scanner’s manual (download it from the manufacturer’s website if you do not have a hard copy) in order to see if it is already enabled, must be manually enabled to read this type of barcode or if it cannot read it at all. In that case, you would have to replace the scanner.

In either case, step 1 would be to indentify what type of barcode you are trying to scan (for example: UPC, EAN, Code 128, Code 39, ITF-14, some type of 2D symbology, etc.).

We can help with this if you like.
