Could the use of a barcode gun that uses infrared rays cause nerve damage to tip of ring finger-left hand?
While working with a barcode gun over the holidays scanning barcodes of products to fill orders for amazon.com (10 hour days for 5 days) of doing the same job I would experience numbness in the evening while sleeping and awaken from these symptoms and after addressing this at work a week and a half later I was given protective gloves to work with. As a result I have not regained feeling in the tip of the ring finger-left hand since I was laid off on Dec. 27th, 2007.

Pretty unlikely. It’s not infrared that barcode readers use; it is a laser, but its intensity is too slight to harm skin or nerve tissue.

I don’t believe that the use of a Telxon Gun or and Electronic Inventory Gun is the cuprit of your lost sensation in your fingertip. I believe it just coinsided with what is happening with the nerves in your finger. The answer to what may (and I stress may) be happening is fairly complicated but is worth examining further with your healthcare provider:
It is very possible that your numbness and/or loss sensation in your fingertip is related directly to your heart. Especially since you have described it as in your left ring finger. It is possible that you are having some complication of the Calcium Channel Valve in your heart. Think of the valve as an electrical outlet in your wall attached to a dimmer switch. The switch controls how much electricity gets to the outlet – the same is true with your Calcium Channel. It regulates what is called the “L-Type Voltage Gated Calcium Channels or VGCC’s)” This prevents calcium levels from stimulating cells and nerve bundles. Your fingers are toes are the furthest extremities from your heart. They are the first to be effected by this condition.
There are simple tests that can be done by your Doctor to evaluate and diagnos this condition. If this is the problem it is usually corrected by a medication in a class called “Calcium Channel Blocker”.
One more note – another symptom of this condition as it furthers itself without treatment is a change in color of the fingertip – such as from normal to white then from white to a bruised and bluish color. If you have already progressed to discoloration then you need to be tested soon. It may not be a Calcium Channel Problem but it could be something else or something more serious.
I hope this helps!
