Grocery store scanners are so weak and have such a short wave length , it is impossible for them to harm anyone.
If it was the case, the clerks would all be wearing goggles for protection.
The beam barely makes it through the glass top , that’s why the item has to be so close before it can be read.

What Footprintz said. The laser is weak and therefore cannot damage eyesight. This explains the reasoning for placing the objects so close to the laser for them to be properly scanned.
