do barcodes let off alarms?

do barcodes let off alarms?
me and my buddy got in a fight and he says that barcodes that are plastic and you can take off dont set off the alarms but barcodes that are printed on the object do set off the alarms i dissagree who is right

Best answer:

you’re right. The removable ‘stickers’ have an iron strip in them. They are activated by magnetizing them which sets off the alarms as you walk out. They are deactivated by being demagnetized. If you cut them open, you can see the tiny metal strip inside.

In most products it’s not the actual barcode that sets off the alarms. Theres a thing called an “EAS tag” it’s like a mini electrical circuit. In a place such as woolworths/safeway they have EAS tags that are stuck on the outside of a product, it just looks like a little white square sticker, OR in some products it’s inside the packaging and you can’t really remove it without opening it all up and stuff…

So yeah.. Hope that answered your question! :)

Well, I work at Lowe’s and I used to work at Toys R Us and it’s not the barcodes that set off the alarms. Sometimes it’s a sticker with a very thin magnet underneath it (like at Toys R Us) and at Lowe’s there’s a little piece of plastic with a magnet inside that sets off the alarms. They are usually underneath or near the barcodes though.
