Do regular barcodes set off alarms?
Do regular barcodes set off alarms?
I was at Wal Mart yesterday and saw a little boy trailing a few steps away from his mom, out the door. He was holding a book of somesort, probably a colouring book. She ran after him and pulled him back inside. I noticed that the alarm didn’t go off. Weren’t they supposed to? Nobody even noticed..
Does this mean printed on barcodes won’t set off alarms? I’m curious.
Best answer:
If you steal, police will come in to your house and hit you.

No they don’t, they have small RF tags that set off the alarms, on the more attractive items.

Yes, the scanners near the doors of stores don’t look for barcodes. If they did, it would be really easy to sneak by them, by just covering up the barcode. Instead these scanners use radio waves are are looking for little RF tags on or in the products. If you see a little thin white or gray plastic thing stuck to a box, or inside a book, or a plastic tag on clothing, that’s what it’s looking for.

It’s kind of weird how it works. Usually if you see a big plastic tag like those on clothing and the backs of CD, DVD, and video game cases, those will set the alarms off. Smaller, less expensive items will not, such as candy. Most electronics and clothing have sensors on them that set off alarms until they pass over the scanner which has a special type of magnet that deactivates the sensor.
