Do stores use barcodes to prevent stealing or do they use other devices?
what do they use to know if you steal something?
ARE theses magnetic strips used on all items?
Best answer:
They use magnetic strips. The magnetic strip sends a signal to the units at the exit/entrance of the store and when this happens it sets off an alarm. They are genuinely small white strips about an inch in length and a quarter of an inch in width. When you purchase something it slid across something that demagnetizes the strip that way the alarm does not go off since you legitimately purchased it. The magnetic strip is visual somewhere on the merchandise, however, if it is a multimedia or expensive item it could be somewhere inside of the packaging.

Barcodes are used to speed up checkout lanes and accurately price the item. Also they help in automated inventory. To deter theft magnetic strips, cameras and undercover store detectives are used.

Barcodes are not used to prevent retail theft.
Taking retail theft to mean a customer not paying for an item when leaving the store.
They are used amongst other things for stock control. (not quite the same thing as anti theft as mentioned above)
However they can be used to detect “Stock Strinkage” which may be caused by staff pilfering or spoilage.
Barcodes have to be scanned by an optical reader so if the item with the barcode is concelealed it would not be read.
The Bar code may be on top of a small white magnetic strip. In which case the check out person de magnetizes the strip before you go through a scanner located at the entrance/exit.
It’s the magnetic strip that is the anti theft device not the Barcode.
Anti theft devices may include Die Tags. 2″ round disks that spill a die on items of clothes, ruining them if not removed by the correct tool – which the check out person uses at point of sale.
There are other anti theft device including RDFI devices which are not in common use for this purpose as yet.
