Best answer:

Sounds like Supermarket Sweep, with a variation. Supermarket Sweep, daytime game TV show, was teams ran through a supermarket to fill up shopping carts. The biggest checkout total won that day’s grand prize.

Back in 1984 was an odd little handheld electronic game device called Barcode Battler. You swiped playing cards imprinted with a barcode. Then pre-determined avatars acted out results on an 8-bit display the results much like “rock, paper, sissors”. Kind of dumb. Then, someone tried the gum wrapper bar code and the another game is invented using the supermarket codes. Barcodes were just then becoming common on products.

However, Barcode Battler, the handheld, ceased to be manufactured about the same time.

Maybe, because a programmable cell phone can read barcodes, we have Barcode Battler II?????

Interesting question, I had to respond so I’d have a link to see if you get any better answers.
