Does anybody know the type of barcode used in access gates?
It is about the type of barcode used in stickers attached to vehicles that grant you access to residential community gates. I’d like to know the type of barcode used by those systems. thanks in advance.

The type of bar code used is no different from a regular bar code used in say, retail stores. However, the PDF 417 and Codabar bar code formats are slightly more popular. It’s the difference in the implementation of the reader and the security mechanisms that make bar codes used in access gates different from regular bar code readers.

Barcode readers for access control were first pioneered over 15 years ago and have been continually improved over the years, to give even better performance and reliability. One major advantage to a barcode system is increased traffic flow, since vehicles are read automatically, they can move through the gate as quickly as it can open.

The basic system consists of two parts: the barcode reader, which is mounted near the gate, and the barcode decals, which are applied to vehicles or ID cards. The reader projects a beam of light from a laser diode in a vertical line. This laser line hits the decal and is reflected back to the reader, which analyzes and decodes the reflections to read the barcode.

Barcode readers today will read standard size automatic vehicle identification (AVI) decal at a 6-foot distance in direct sunlight. Barcode readers can scan decals up to 6′ away on vehicles moving up to 25 mph and don’t require drivers to open car windows. More sophisticated models are able to track who entered and who went out for added security. These readers better survive the weather and are generally more protected from vandalism than the old slot readers.

The bar code decals and system components are compatible with access control systems via Wiegand 26bit output, or can connect to a computer security system via the RS232 interface.

General specifications require the reader be installed at least one car length before the gate. It does not matter on which side of the road it is mounted, as long as the barcode decals are placed on the same side. Some manufacturers also offers a standard mounting post that is intended to be used on a six-inch curb or concrete mounting pad. It is a heavy-duty modular system with internal temperature control, which unlike the RF-ID, is immune to interfering radio frequency. Some manufacturers also offer retro-reflective barcode decals. Most readers will reject photocopies.

Rain or fog will not affect barcode readers until it is impossible to physically see across the 6 foot reading distance. The decals have a waterproof adhesive backing that will last up to five years, making it hard to remove or steal. Once installed, regular maintenance on the equipment consists of cleaning the optics and reader window.

Here’s the link to the patent for this: patentstorm.us/patents/5942742-description.html

Many system come equipped with “Bar Code Masks” that add security to the system – a rectangular area which covers up a bar code on insert from being read or duplicated. Bar masks are printed in two colors – red or black. A black bar mask prevents the bar code to be read with the human eye but, will allow scanning equipment to read the bar code.
