Does anyone know what the heck this piece of technology is (see photo)?
Here’s the photo I took of it:

I found this in my company’s supply closet in the obsolete junk bin. It looks like a cross between a barcode scanner and a Bob Barker-style microphone. Appears to be an ethernet-size connection on the end. I’ve been pretending it’s a microphone and interviewing my co-workers, but I’m pretty sure it has another purpose.

Best answer:

a rainbow box.

It was used for drawing on early computers. You plug the one end into the computer then draw on a special monitor using the “business end”(metal part). Kind of a precursor to a Promethean Activboard (smart board) look it up and you’ll see. Stay with the microphone idea though, probably the most use it’s gotten since the early-mid 90′s

You had it right in your question. That is a bar code scanner wand. It would be plugged into a portable reader/printer to be able to scan codes and either adjust them or printer new labels as required.
