Durable dog toys & dog toy ideas?

I am heading out to the pet store for dog toys once again. I’ve had my 40 lb pup for 5 months now and have gone through about 40 toys! The only things left are kongs! Do you have any ideas for toys that do last a while and are not kongs? He is doesn’t have a huge jaw.

Just a suggestion for you (in exchange hopefully)…large plastic pop (soda) bottles are a great toy for a while. Remove the label & get ear plugs! :)
Thanks for the fantastic answers. Can’t pick one so I will put it to a vote.

Sometimes the best toys are something you already have around the house. My little dog has an old golfclub headcover that he carries around everywhere with him. Maybe its because it has my husband’s scent?

Our dogs may have been weird, but.. They’d sit behind the house for hours, heads to the ground, butts in the air, barking like crazy at bricks and lengths of rusty chain. Those are about as durable as you can get! (This probably doesn’t help you much, as I suspect that our dogs were mentally deficient.)

Of course, there ARE different size kongs available, even one for your 40-lb pup with the chihuahua-sized mouth. :)

My dog is a 60lb. puppy and he loves chewing on the Nylabones for extra hard chewers (they make different sizes), he hasn’t ruined one yet, there are rubbery ones and hard ones, the hard ones might break teeth though. He also loves the kongs but they also make different shape kong toys, like balls and bone shapes. We found this crocadile burlap stuffed animal with a reinforcement strap inside that makes it stronger so you can play tug or fetch, its lasting a while but he was able to rip open the legs a little bit. Rope toys last a long time too.

When outside, the pop bottles are a great idea! We’ve put pebbles in them to make even more noise! Our Dachshund loved it whe she was a puppy. ( She destroyed most everything else.) We’ve found that the best toys are the “home-made” ones. We save my husband’s worn socks, tie a knot in each end, and it makes the best quiet toy for our dog.. She can tug, shake, or fetch, and when she’s just worn herself out, it’s soft enough to snuggle up with for a nap and it’ll be there to play with when she wakes up!

Tennis balls are fantastic. My dog loves to chew on those till he cracks it. Just get some cheap-o ones from Kmart or Walmart.

My dog loves 2 L bottles too. Loves to get the cap off of it. We play with those outside too. He pounces on it and it shoots out from under him across the yard. So he chases it. Or I’ll give it a little kick. I dunno who has more fun him or me! LOL
