A barcode is just a sequence of numbers, similar to an ID number. It would take up a lot more space and be far less efficient to encode additional information. It is far easier to store pricing data in a database and reference it using the barcode number (aka UPC code, SKU code etc.)
Further, if the price changes every barcode would have to be replaced, rather than updating one database entry.
Still further, the barcode encodes the manufacturer/publisher as well as item ID so it can be verified where the item came from.

The barcode identifies the object and is information that is not going to change from day to day or retailer to retailer. Price is far too volatile to be stored like that.
