External keyboard connection to a laptop?

I have a very old keyboard (Chicony KB-5911) with a small round keyboard connector plug (not a USB). I need to connect it to my laptop (Dell Latitude X300 running Windows XP), because that keyboard has foreign-language alphabet that I need to use. I do not have a driver for that keyboard.

I tried to connect it directly to my laptop’s keyboard port, but that did not work — the laptop continued to take input only from the laptop’s keyboard, not from the external keyboard.

What should I do to be able to use that external keyboard?
Also, how do I switch between external keyboard and built-in keyboard back-and-forth?

I know I can get transparent labels with foreign alphabet and to attach it to my laptop built-in keyboard, but I do not want to do that as that would clutter the keyboard, and I only need to use that foreign alphabet occasionally.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!
