One out of every 300 human keystrokes is a mistake. One out of every 3 million bar code reads is a mistake. Bar code readers can read at 10 – 10,000 times the speed of humans can type.

So, for instance, if the pallets at a wholesale grocer’s warehouse have a bar code that says “I’m a pallet of Campbell’s Chicken Soup, 24 cans per case, 120 cases per pallet”, then that wholesaler’s computer knows, as soon as the guy on the loading dock scans the bar code on the pallet from the truck that came from Campbell’s, that he has (120 x 24) cans of chicken soup in his warehouse. That is faster than sending the bill of lading to the keypunch ladies at corporate HQ, three states away.

If the wholesaler’s programmers are sharper than a bowling ball, the wholesaler’s receiving program checks outstanding orders against receipts and sees that Jack’s grocery has been asking for Chicken Soup for two days, and does something so that eight of those 120 cases are on their way to Jack that afternoon.
