How can I print waterproof labels for freezer packaging?

I save leftover food in vacuum packaging in the freezer and put labels printed from my inkjet printer to identify the contents later. However, the ink smudges occassionally when packages are stacked on one another inside the freezer. Is there any inexpensive consumer device that will let me print water-proof labels for the food packages?

    Buy a printer that uses gel not ink; they are new to the market and don’t smear when wet.

    1. Use a laser printer.
    2. Use a Sharpie on your labels instead of printing them.
    3. Put clear tape across the printing. Although if they get damp from the bottom, the printing may run.
    4. Laminate the labels – you can use clear tape on both sides before attaching to package (although this defeats the purpose of using a “label”.
