How do barcodes track your spending and whereabouts?

How do barcodes track your spending and whereabouts?
I just got a credit card and my cousin said the police found him for child support with his credit card statement and product purchases through sales tax records. They knew what he bought, where, and when.

Best answer:

The barcodes don’t track anything. They are used for inventory and easy checkout. His credit card statement will tell them when and where he was buying stuff.

Merchants can and do tie credit/debit card purchases back to the actual item. It’s called targeted marketing. But if the cops want it, there it is. Obviously only major merchants do this.
