the lines represent numarical code… a scanner can determine the code by the size and spacing of the lines

Well they make each line differently.First they make it, then they put it in the machines as a specific lable and then you buy it.

Barcodes are fonts. They are letters and numbers in a different format. The lines are just a line version of the numbers you see below it. You can download barcode fonts on the internet. They come in different sizes depending on how big you want the label.
The scanners then translate the lines into numbers which computers or register can use to identify the product.

The way they work is: All of those lines you see on the back of a product represent different numbers. Unsually, you will see the numbers printed below these bars. The scanner reads these lines and the computer tells you what the product is and how much the item costs.

As others have said, the lines represent numbers, or rather, the thickness and spacing of them do.

The actual scanner works by rapidly passing a laser light over the barcode. The white areas reflect the laser back, while the black parts don’t. The scanner “reads” the reflections back as a code, which it then converts to numbers for the computer it is attached to.
