How do I get Microsoft Word to open my scanned OCR file?

I have a scanner with OCR inbuilt. I select open with Microsoft Word. I’m using Microsoft Word 2008 for mac. It then pops up with a window ‘Convert File’

    You would choose the format that your OCR software saved the file to. You’d have to check the settings in your OCR program, or at least check the file extension that it saves in. .rtf would be rich text format and .txt is plain text, but there are others.

    I suspect the Word file being created is the old pre-2007 Word .doc format, not the Word 2007+ .docx format. Not sure why Word is asking to convert it, but in Word 2007, there’s an option for automatic conversion on open. Make sure that’s set.

    You might also want to fire up the Office Installation CD and make sure the right converter was installed.
