How do I make my own quilt labels?

How do I make my own quilt labels?

I want a small plain iron or sew on label that I can write on with a textile pen, just who the quilt is for, that it was made by me and the year it was made. I am unable to find anything like this pre-made online, can I make my own somehow? Or does anyone know where I can buy some plain ones?

You could make your own. Find the fabric you’d want to use (or maybe some blanket binding… I’m not really familiar with fabrics). If you want to have anything printed on the label, you can type it up and print it out on a sheet of paper, then trace over with with a transfer ink and iron it on. Or, you could just write directly onto the fabric with the textile pen, and sew it on.

    You can make your own.

One way to do it is to use unbleached muslin fabric, which you probably already have for other uses. Cut a piece 1/2″ longer and 1/2″ wider than your finished label. After you have written the information with a textile pen, turn under and press 1/4″ all around. Then use iron-on tape to iron it onto the back of the quilt. You could also stitch a muslin “tube” (cut a strip say 4-1/2″ long and 1-1/2″ wide, fold it to 2-1/4″ x 1-1/2,” stitch 1/4″ seams top and bottom, turn inside out to 2-1/4″ x 1″, write the information on, and stitch 1/4″ of the open edge into the quilt binding on the back.

I did a Google search on “sew-in labels,” since my only experience has been with the iron-on homemade ones, and came up with this site: http://www.ehow.com/how_2136103_own-sewin-labels.html. The instructions are for using a transfer on satin ribbon, then sewing it in–a really clever idea!

We Quilters make our own. Label is usually muslin or a light fabric.
Iron a piece of freezer paper to the back, this stabilizes the fabric.
Using a pigma pen Include the Name of who pieced the quilt, Who quilted it, the date and year it was made and the makers city and state
Who it was made for. Remove the freezer paper. Now cut another piece of muslin and put right sides together and sew around leaving a two inch opening. Turn the label right side out. Press in the seam allowance at the two inch opening. Whip stitch closed.
Hand sew this label to the back of the quilt in the lower right hand corner.

Here are some printable labels – you print the frame/background on the inkjet fabric, then write in the specifics with a Pigma or other pen of your choice.

(I will mention that while many people love printable labels, my own experience with one was bad – the baby threw up on it and the ink bled.)
Here are a couple of sources for pre-printed labels, some iron-on and some sew-on, where you fill in details with your own pen.

Most commonly, though, I make my own sew-on labels. I cut a piece of pre-washed white or off-white muslin 1/2″ – 3/4″ bigger in each direction than my desired final size. Then, I cut a piece of freezer paper my desired final size, center it shiny-side down on the back of my muslin and press with a hot dry iron until it sticks. The freezer paper stabilizes the fabric so I can draw, write or stamp whatever I want to say on the fabric side (I use Pigma pens). When you’re done decorating your label, turn it paper-side-up again and dab or paint a little liquid starch on the exposed fabric all around the edges, especially right next to the paper. Fold the fabric flaps to the paper side, mitering corners neatly, and press in place with the iron. Lift one of the flaps and peel off the freezer paper. Press your label again carefully from the right side and it’s ready to applique onto the back of your quilt. (You can even use the same piece of freezer paper again.)
Good luck – hope one of these ideas works for you.

    Let me ask my MIL

She owns a quilt shop, and my SO’s grandmother made my son a blanket, and has a label on the blanket saying who its made by.

Let me call her, and I’ll update this and let you know where they got them from!
