How do I remove Gold Embossed printing from a book cover?

I have four church register books that keep legal records of Marriages, etc. that contain the former name of our church. I had the name Gold Embossed on them and now would like to remove it to have it re-done. I’ve considered covering them with permanant inventory labels but removing them would be much neater. Any suggestions? I do not want any damage to the books.

You might try a common pencil eraser. I have seen that work before, and the eraser should be soft enough not to damage the book. I’d test it gently first and make sure it doesn’t damage the book (maybe test it somewhere that can’t be seen). You might also try using some kind of tape if the book surface can handle the placing and removing of the tape without suffernig damage. The blue tape that doesn’t pull paint might be a good choice if it can pull the gold but not damage the book. The eraser has worked for me before, but I wasn’t working with the exact same thing as you are obviously… Good luck.
