How do License barcodes work?

How do License barcodes work?
I live in NJ and have an under-21 license. I was going to a club the other day witha friend who is over-21 and they scanned his card at the door. What information actually shows up, and how does that really work?

Best answer:

Privacy laws being what they are today, I would think they could scan for licence validity, and not much more. They aren’t law enforcement so they have no access to DMV computers..

The bar code will have all of your current information from ID number, the birth-date and the expiration date, true name, address, city and state and also knows if you are over 21 years of age…………….

It must be there to communicate the information quickly to someone who is not connected to the database.

For example, police could quickly collect names, addresses and race of everyone passing a roadblock or boarding an airplane.

If you move to another state, it would save them a bit of typing.
