a bar code is like numbers. it is just a way of its thickness of lines and spaces for the computer to read.

The scanner picks up the barcode by reading the bars and spaces between them. Each barcode is unique and has slightly different spacing.

As the scanner picks up the bars it transfers the information to a computer where it matches the barcode with the item being purchased.

the thickeness and gap between all the lines represents a number normally the one you see below it and the barcode reader has allready had that number scaned in and a description added to it so when it gets scaned it recalls that info and uses it that why all the same packet of crisp have the same code and all one brand of can ect….

The lines are dark against light and get translated into what a computer understands – 0s and 1s.

The universal product code is exactly what it says, a worldwide product recognition standard.

Some other users have developed their own barcode standards (eg libraries and post offices)

Barcodes can give instant sales and stock level data.

They are based on binary math, zeros and ones. The bar is a one, and the white space is a zero. If you look close at a bar code, you may see some wider spaces or wider bars, Thats because two zeros in a row would need a double space, and two ones in a row would need double bars. Usually, the actual number represented by the bar code is listed under bars. The scanner “Reads” the number, looks up the product & price in the computer, then rings up the cost.

The barcode is simply a number encoded as bars. A database is then used, in conjunction with the scanned barcode number, to obtain the details — price, description, etc.
