Most barcodes are either UPC or EAN linear barcodes. They are nothing more than license plates. They identify individual items and when read its sent to a computer and register and look up information on it. The item’s price tags are not stored on the item itself.

A bar code does NOT read data, it is the data. A laser light is passed over the barcode by the reader, and then the pattern returned from it is read. There is a set of actual relating data fro the item. There is also coding to indicate how far the item has passed the reader, and the speed it is being passed at. The 2 sets of information are compared, and the computer interprets the item data part. This is a very simplified description, a full one would take several pages.
