How does a wireless barcode scanner work? Does it need to be programmed?
I own a small business and we pack multiple products. We are wasting too much time with mispacks and looking for the errors that we cause. Would a scanner of this type be useful? What else would I need?

Best answer:

Yes this would help you assuming you have the right software.
These aren’t really something you can just go buy and use. They need proprietary software and a computer to go along with it.

I’m sure you can do a google search to find out more about them.

Yes it would need to be programmed. Each of your SKUs would need a bar code, they might already have one assigned by your industry. Then you could scan items as they are pulled/packed to insure accuracy.

Probably somebody in your industry could have a turnkey system already available. Might be the easiest way to go. If you get an industry publication, check there.

A barcode scanner by itself isnt’ going to help you avoid shipping mistakes. It would have to be tied to some kind of order filling software. You need something that will pull up an order and tick off each item one at a time and not allow the order to ship unless everything that is in the order and in stock has been packed.

A bar code scanner will read a bar code and sent that information to your computer as a string of numbers/text. It acts just like you typed those numbers in. You can place them in a spreadsheet, word document, text file, etc.

However to make USE of the information, you would need an inventory program that would read the bar code, and then compare it to the original order to assure that the right items (and quantity) are being loaded.

Usually such an application has to be custom developed for your business. Those are usually referred to as “turnkey” or “error proofing” programs. Check the trade magazines for your industry, and you will probably find an already made one for your type of business.
