They use the The Universal Product Code (UPC) ( in the UK they use EAN) to print a series of numbers which are replaced by lines from this code. So 1 is always the same line etc.

You can download the UPC as a font and make your own barcodes in word if you really wanted to.

Then when the till reads this “number” it looks it up in a database (and finds the product it correspondes to )then charges you accordingly.
