How silly is it to label the Creator of the Universe a “He,” as if It would require a sex?

Does one really need a sex when one can mold beings from clay or bring them into existence with cosmic power? One would need a sex only if there is a corresponding opposite sex needed for physical reproduction.

Not as silly as those who believe such a thing actually exists. :-)

    “It” just looks funny.

I’m all good with “She,” though…

The fact is that God is neither male or female. Nor are the angels. Where physical references to God are made … he, his eyes, ears, arms… they are there for our benefit because we as humans could never understand the concept of a spiritual being.

Male dominated religions… How many female Dominated or even Equal religions are there.

How come you didn’t suggest a label? I thought you might want “it”

  • 6. Britknee  |  February 15th, 2011 at 12:35 pm

Because the creator of the universe is God and God is referred to as “He” in the Bible.

Just remember that religion was contrived by man, that is why it is so outlandishly ridiculous.

  • 8. BrownSkin?  |  February 15th, 2011 at 2:32 pm

Well, since Jesus called him his “Father,” I think its fair to assume God is a “He.”

  • 9. sybil_the_soothsayer  |  February 15th, 2011 at 3:14 pm

Of course God is referred to as a He because human beings have limited imagination and must personify a force in the Universe. Then of course, since men are usually the ones coming up with the imagery, they label it male, because it HAS to be like them!

Ok, but I feel very very very sorry for you if you let that even bothers you because as long as you live you’ll hear people refer to God as “He” or if you want you can refer to God as “she” or whatever. You definitely need some prayers.

The Bible is a book that is inspired by God. In it, He refers to Himself as ‘He”. So who are we to question that?

  • 12. svetlana  |  February 15th, 2011 at 4:44 pm

A classic need vs want dilemma… “He” doesn’t need sex, but, of course, why woudn’t “he” want it? I mean, it’s sex. Who wouldn’t want it?

  • 13. Eds  |  February 15th, 2011 at 4:48 pm

HE does not need a “sex” but HE is called “FATHER” by CHRIST, the MESSIAH. Christ was HIS SON and the one who died so that you and I would have an opportunity to attend Heaven with the saved. Have you become a Christian yet? The time is not guaranteed. I would be glad to study with you. Have a great weekend.
    Thanks,
    Eds

It’s very silly. Of course I will point out that man wrote the bible and he wanted to prove how much more important he was than woman. So he needed God to be male.

Now though what do you call a deity that is both male and female?

  • 15. shell answer man  |  February 15th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Our language doesn’t have a neuter personal pronoun or possessive pronoun. The god of the bible is nothing but personal – it is a he or a she but not some ‘it’ that sits across some endless void and has no contact with humans (the god of the bible is a theistic god, not a deistic god).

It’s a problem a book editor could solve, not a big mystical or philosophical problem.

Of course it is not silly..the bible tells us He is Father..that is male isn’t it? We either believe He is a male or we don’t..there is no point mashing the bible up into some conglomerate of muck. I think you are just thinking in the small realms of human thinking….and not thinking as someone who believes the concept as spoken of in the bible.

Well, that’s true, but consider two things:

    1. At the time the Bible was written, the world was male-dominated. So the men who wrote the Bible, saying that God was the most powerful being would automatically register as a male trait. also:

    2. Grammatically, it makes sense to say He instead of It.
For example: If anyone ate this meat, HE would be sick.
The whole “he/she” bit only came after the feminist movement.

I think you’re pretty dead on with that question/observation.

the great creator is duality not a he but a energy

  • 20. man who sold the world  |  February 15th, 2011 at 7:46 pm

because he was created by a male dominant society

In examining Scripture, two facts become clear: First, that God is a Spirit, and does not possess human characteristics or limitations; second, that all the evidence contained in Scripture agrees that God revealed Himself to mankind in a male form.

As John 4:24 states, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” Since God is a spiritual being, God does not possess physical human characteristics. However, sometimes figurative language used in Scripture assigns human characteristics to God in order to make it possible for man to understand God. This assignment of human characteristics to describe God is called “anthropomorphism.” Anthropomorphism is simply a means for God (a spiritual being) to communicate truth about His nature to mankind, a physical being. Since man is a physical being, man is limited in his understanding of those things beyond the physical realm, and anthropomorphism in Scripture helps man to understand who God is.

G-d in the old testament and new is often called a father, a might man of war, and a husband to his people among others.

I believe we need to concentrate more on what God has done as oppose to sexes. Be more concern if your name is written in the Lambs Book of Life, if not , you will hear depart from me I knew you not ye workers of iniquity or go into the joy of the Lord. You choose!

God is referred to as the father and when we accept Christ we are his adopted children. It is just the way we relate to our creator God is neither male or female but the one who created both .

  • 25. ROY  |  February 15th, 2011 at 9:24 pm

Both male and female attributes come from God the Father.

You need to understand that in order to communicate to mankind God must use anthropomorhic language.

The masculine use of “He” has nothing to do with the “sexual” connotations that we put to the word and more to do with the emphasis of the “Personhood” of God.

To speak in a nonpersonal way would mean God would be an “It” and this is not the way that He wishes to be known.

“He” is preferred over “She” in order to remove the confusion that would follow regarding the mechanics of authority in the area of relationship.

As Christians we are refered to as the “Bride” of Christ which is analogous to recognizing the value of submission within relationship to the one worthy of our submission.

A Fathers love is a great thing and it relinquishes us from the responsibility of outcomes when we honor the Lordship of God as “He.”

I think its important also to understand that it is not required that we have full comprehesion of the why’s of spiritual difficulties as much as we at least have a mere apprehension of those truths behind the difficulties.

and that my good man is exactly why i don’t believe in the bible…….
to me it shows that the bible was not only writen by humans which inhertitly screw things up(if you ever played telephone as a child you know what i mean) but was writen by men who back in the day held them selves more inportant then anyother thing on this planet including women and their for molded their beliefs to show that suprimacy to the masses. it was a way of making women and other creatures subordanate to men. a way of gaining control look how many religions has the male as the controling aggressor in their religion. i believe jesus was based off of a real man wwho tried to lead and lead others on a good path. i believe he got married and had children as well, however that part was kept out because jesus treated his wife not only as an equal but left her in charge of his beliefs and there for she got earased from history because women could not be shown to have any power or singficance in that time or time frames thereafter. and if you go off the argument that a fathers love surpasses a mothers love you are wrong, not that fathers don’t love their children or would die for their children but a mothers connection with her child surpases a fathers do to pregnacy, and lets face it how many fathers have abandoned their children for greener pastures? god would have had a better chance of convencing people if he would have made him self a woman. ( in christian beleif structure) at least that’s what i think.
thank you for asking such a good question. i believe there is a creator and it is a pure soul (energy) and there fore has no sex.

Oh, but it makes perfect sense if you’re a bunch of men trying to maintain a male-dominated society. Make everybody think that anything of importance (like a deity) MUST be male.
