I know how to get the UPC codes and can register with Bowkers.

But getting final cover and actual printing, soft cover, looking for tips. Kinda of low budget at first,

First, make sure you really mean self-publishing. The world is full of companies that will produce your book for a price and put their name on it, just in case it makes a profit. Remember, he who owns the ISBN owns the book.

Second, make sure it’s really ready to go. How many times have you proof-read it? Who else has proofed it for you?

Third, there are lots of printers and quite a few have price lists on their websites but you’ll need to contact them for detailled quotes because once you start preparing, extras add up – for assembling files, for adding barcodes, for shipping etc

Fourth, make sure you know all about marketing. Soon, you are going to own a hundred or so copies of your book. Do you really know how to sell them? If not, contact a writers’ group or a small business group and get some lessons in presentation and marketing.

Amazon has this cool new program where you advertise your book on their site, and as people purchase the book, they print it for you! I don’t know if they do cover art and those sorts of things, but, knowing amazon, I’ll bet money they have someone who will do it for you. Otherwise, I don’t know much about the program, but I read and article about it somewhere a couple of months ago, and mentally filed it away for when I’m done with my book.

You can advertise your novel on worthyofpublishing.com. In fact, you should post an excerpt there to see if it really is good enough. Publishing companies and self-published authors put their works on that site as advertisement and people rate them, which almost shows the quality of the book. It’s copyright protected, so no one can steal your stuff. While you’re there, you should check out my featured novel Witch Tourniquet and Diamond’s the City of Dawn.
