If something with a barcode is stolen can it be tracked to the store that bought it?

If something with a barcode is stolen can it be tracked to the store that bought it?
I’m not on here for answers that are morally correct. I want to know if say a book was stolen from walmart and the person resold it to a bookbuying company. Can that book be tracked to who walmart?

Best answer:

Yes.. It can because of the code. It has a tracking code too

No, it cannot. The barcode on a given book is the same no matter where you buy it. Barcodes are specific to a given product but not to the retail outlet in which that product is sold.

Take a look at your favorite new release novel and look at it at Borders, Barnes & Noble, and Books-a-Million. You will find that it carries the same barcode everywhere.
