is bartending a good way to get through collage, is this a good plan i have?
Hi all,
Ok so i wanna go to collage for a computer software engineer and get a bachlers in this feild. But i want to move out once i’m 18-19 ( done with high school ) and go to a bartender school like a 500-700$ one. Get my bartender licences or whatever i need, An be a bartender right when i’m 18 and do it till i get out of collage and i’m ready to start my software career. Would this be a good idea? I would ether be living on my own or with a friend in a apartment. I’d probably be working 5-6 days a week. I’m 17 right now. living in MA.
Thank you all in advance! God bless!

It can be done. A friend on mine is working her way through law school right now as a bartender. However, there are some pretty hefty downsides and you will have to be very disciplined and self-motivated. The biggest downside is that bartending may require you to work long hours, often late into the night (perhaps even all night). It can get really difficult to keep up with school work. Also, depending on where and when you work, bartending may not get you a whole lot of money. In addition, bars may require you to turn 21 before they’ll let you start. I’m not sure what the rules are in your state, but I assume you would figure that out before going ahead with it.
Like I said, it can definitely work, you’ll just have to be careful about balancing your hours with school and such. It also may not hurt to look into other part-time jobs you wouldn’t mind doing.

Bartending school is a complete waste of money. The owners/managers of the establishment could care less about the actual drinks themselves (cuz that is the easy part), and more about your ability to take care of customers, fast and efficient, having a good relationship with them, and experience in th service industry.
I can honestly tell you that when I am given an application that has little or no service industry experience but a bartending school, it goes right into the trash, and many other managers I know do that also.
Your best bet is to start out waiting tables and work your way into bartending at that establishment. You will be able to support yourself as a waiter/waitress, many people do.
Please heed my advice, you can pay for bartending school if you want to anyway, or you can flush the money right down the toilet-same thing.

its good you want some income coming in on the side but it would be great for your career if you can get an internship or some working experience related to your field. not only will you learn alot and gain experience but you’ll also meet people in your field and you can start creating your network of contacts. you can learn software and attend trainings for less money and it’ll help make you more marketable. going to school full time and working is hard, and if your working nights and going to school during the day you’re not going to be getting much sleep or have much time to yourself. its great have a friend for a roommate, it really cuts down on your expenses and you’ll enjoy the company. you can also do bartending if you want but dont lose track of your real priorities…your grades and your career.
