Is it ok to replace a lost library book with a new one?
Is it ok to replace a lost library book with a new one?
I borrowed a really old 80′s kids movie from the library and we can’t find it anywhere. It is late and they emailed me and said that if I don’t return it, they will charge me for a new one. Well, I found the exact same DVD for under .00 on ebay, new in plastic. Can I order it and give to the library? Obviously, the’ll have to put a new barcode label on it, but they’d have to do that anyway if they ordered it themselves.

Why don’t you ask them? I don’t see why not.

Yes, of course, you got them a new book!

I’m sure that would be OK. The letter was probably machine generated and it would just put on the original purchase price automatically.

Part of their charge includes the extra work but I’m sure they will be happy to accept a replacement copy.
You may need to ask them to reverse the charge on your card when you do this.

I don’t think they’d have a problem with it. I’ve done similar things. I checked out a DIY law book that was out of date, but it at least helped me know what a good book was as far as the level of information it contained. When I was done, I took it to the library with the one I checked out and told them is was the latest version, they need to discard the old one, and they could have the new one.
