Is it Possible for Amtrak electric locomotive trains to come to grand Central station from the Nec,?
Someone said that it is possible for amtrak’s Electric loco’s like for example the HHP-8 and AEM-7 to haul trains to Grand Central, all it has to do is follow the Metro-Norths New Haven Line from New Rochelle. If that’s possible would anything interrupt the trains from running on the line like clearance issues or something.

the issue is power. Amtrak uses only overhead running anywhere from 12.5kv to 25kv AC, past Pelham, MNRR switches over to it’s heritage New York Central 700v DC third rail, something the Amtrak equipment is not designed to use. they have third rail equipped locomotives in the P32-ACDM, but those are set for the LIRR overrunning third rail at Penn station and in the river tunnels. MNRR’s third rail is bottom contact.

As soon as a train hits Mount Vernon East the power is changed from overhead to third rail. So unless the train was towed by a train that has shoes that make contact to the third rail. The answer is no.
