    Bar codes are a computers way of reading numbers. each product has its own serial number so they all have to be different for that store.
    Computers read things in 1 or 0 or on or off
    black for on white for off.
    They read it and can convert the number so they know what the item is.
    A number usually has 16 digits. that would be 10*15
    thats 10x10x10x10x10… 16 times.
    that comes up to 10 quadrillion different possible numbers.
    this way there is no need for repeats.

    Companies purchase a “lot” of UPC numbers from the distributing authority. These would only be assigned to them so no duplicates can exist.

    The numbers can, the sequence cannot.
    Of course the same sequence might be used for some other barcode than the one you probably mean, the barcodes used to identify products for supermarket checkout counters.
