Sure, it's quite simple.

To begin with, there are black and white lines. Each line has 4 degrees of thickness, so we'll assign the thinnest line (whether it's black or white) the value of 1, and the fattest line a value of 4.

Next, look at the UPC code, and there should be 2 black lines that sticks well below the other lines. Ignore those. Every UPC code begins and ends with 101.

Take the first line after the lines that sticks down and depending on the thickness, decide whether the thickness is a 1, 2, 3, or 4 (Don't forget to that it can be either black or white). Do that for the first 4 lines (remember to read both the black and white lines, not just the black lines). You get a 4 number combination, so use the following to decipher what number it is.

0 = 3211, 1 = 2221, 2 = 2122, 3 = 1411, 4 = 1132, 5 = 1231, 6 = 1114, 7 = 1312, 8 = 1213, 9 = 3112

Keep repeating until you reach the end. In the middle, you'll notice 2 black lines that sticks below the others. Ignore it. Every UPC code as a 01010 in the middle.
