Is there a way to tell which store a product came from based on the barcode?

Is there a way to tell which store a product came from based on the barcode?
If bar codes are assigned to a product and not a store then how come stores can tell by scanning it if it is theirs or not? I need to return something and I have taken it to two different stores that say that it was not theirs even though I know that they do sell it.
I am not trying to scam anyone…. but I bought something that I need to return… I thought I bought it from walmart but they said it wasn’t theirs… Is there anyway I can find out where I bought it based on the bar code so I can return it to the proper store? Usually I wouldn’t care but it is pretty spendy.

Best answer:

If a store’s national market share is big enough (for example, Walmart), the manufacturer will produce merchandise with a special bar code just for that particular store.

“return” means taking it back to the store where you bought it, and that is what you should do.

Actually, UPC bar-codes can be store-specific (but they don’t have to be). If a store is big like Walmart or Target, it’s easy for them to get a product manufacturer to agree to use a store-specific barcode. My guess is that more expensive items will have these kinds of bar codes, but cheaper stuff like food and such probably wouldn’t.

It could be Walmart. I discovered that a product at one Walmart could not necessarily be returned to any Walmart. I purchased and item and misplaced the receipt. I go to two different stores, and didn’t think it was a big deal. I could not return the item at the other store. Go figure! I took it to the other store, and I had no problems with returning it.

Some stores can track sales on a credit card. Just ask if they can, and if you used one to purchase the item. Check cards work the same way. GL

I looked up this question and thank you for the two answers that actually have to do with this. I received this item as a gift from a relative in Alaska and I do not want to hurt their feelings by returning it, but I don’t like it. So Mary, if I knew which store it came from, I would return it to that same store. As for you Happy, get a life.
