Looking for a good (laser) printer to use at home. Any suggestions?
Hi. I’m looking to purchase a good printer to use at home. I’m leaning towards laser printers, because I’ve learned from past experience that cartridges for inkjet printers end up costing me much more than the printer itself did. Also, I’m interested in getting one that can be used as a copier and scanner as well. I’m thinking of something in the 0-0 price range.

Can anyone make any recommendations? Also, I have a wireless network set up at home. Will I need to have a computer on and running as a printer server in order to wirelessly connect to the printer?

Best answer:

A print server removes the need to have the printer connected to a computer. It plugs between your network and the printer and shares the printer to the network.

If you’re thinking of printing pictures in high quality (Any higher than newspaper pictures) then don’t go with a laser printer. Laser printers are great for text but are notoriously terrible at pictures (they’re too precise).

Myself I have a black and white laser printer (donated by a very good friend) for printing text and a photo inkjet printer for high quality pictures.

For that price range and the features you want, you will not find a good one.

I would look at the HP OfficeJet Pro L7000 series. It is inkjet, however, the cost per page is at laser cost (black is around 1 cent per page, while the color is around 7 cents), as well as laser speeds (30 plus pages per minute both black and color.

The base model is $299 I think from HP. They have models up from there that have all the features and more.
