  A recommendation would be hard to provide as there are many specifications that you may need to look at:
  1. Do you want one with an automatic document feeder to scan or fax multiple pages at a time? or would a flat glass work OK?
  2. What print/copy speed are you looking for?
  3. What interface connectivity do you want or need? (USB, parallel, network, etc.)
  4. What operating system compatibility do you need? (Mac, Windows XP or Vista, etc.)
  5. What is the minimum scan resolution you need?
  6. Do you need high capacity paper trays or expandability?
  7. What size and type of paper compatibility do you need?

  These are just ones off the top of my head, there may be more. I’ve included a link below that lists several pages of all-in-one monochrome laser machines between $100 & $300. Any one of them is about as good as another as they all can vary between models from year to year. HP, Brother, Lexmark and Epson are all pretty common and may be easier to find supplies and repairs facilities if needed.

  I don’t like to recommend a specific brand, however, I do have a simple check list on what to look out when it comes to purchasing a new all-in-one printer:

  - Printer Scanner Copier Fax Functions, Minimum fax modem speed is 33kbps for black and white faxes.

  - Printer Scanner Copier Resolution, Minimum 600 x 600dpi for black and white.

  - Printer Scanner Copier Fax Memory, Minimum 8MB, ideal 16MB

  – Printer Scanner Copier Fax Speed, The faster the better, minimum speed 22ppm

  - Ink – This is the cash cow for all printer manufacture. Having more milliliters in an ink cartridge does not guarantee more output in term of sheets. For instant, certain manufacture’s ink cartridge contain 15ml of ink but due to the lack of efficiency, it managed to print 5000 pages as oppose to its competitor’s 10ml ink with the same amount of output but cost less when purchased.

  - After sales service – If doesn’t make any sense to drive 1 hour to the service center, right? It is important that after sales service is up to the mark and easily accessible.

  - Online reviews – Nothing beats peer reviews, unlike newspaper and magazines, these users provide their own firsthand experience.

  - Operating system – Make sure it works with both Windows and Mac.
