DNA barcoding is the search for a region of DNA that can be sequenced that will give a unique “signature” for plant species. A very good region in the mitochondrial genome of animals has been found (called CO1 for short) but rates of mitochondrial evolution are far slower in plants than animals, making COI an unlikely candidate. The search still goes on to find such a region, possibly in the chloroplast genome.
