Need ideas for my IT thesis?

I’m starting to work on my thesis which is a big requirement for graduation. I’m a programming major. My initial proposal was a barcode ID system for my school but my instructor junked it saying it’s too simple (but I never saw anyone do it.) But my mind is set on this proposal so now I’m hunting for ideas to add a “twist” to my concept.

The system should:

1. Incorporate some hardware (other than a pricing gun)
2. Should be programmed in visual basic.
3. Be useful to a school or college

I can use any idea, thought, concept, link, spitballing, anything will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    need more info on ur original idea :s
    so what? a barcode gets issued to every student?
    that being the case u could use it in alot of places.
    -Barcode + fingerprint scanner to take roll.
    -Perhaps an account linked to it so it can be used to get food.
    -Serve as a library card.
    -If u have school parking can be used to pay for that.
    -Use it to Login to School network
