Oil Change Copied VIN Number, is it ok?

Hi,

I was just at a place changing my oil and the guy used a wireless barcode scanner to scan my VIN number, are they allowed to do that, I am scared because I have heard of too many clone stories before. What should I do?

I think that mechanics and lube techs do this to record the maintenance history of your vehicle, if you ever sell it, and a dealer or private party inquires about the car’s repair or accident history.

“Calm Down” that is so the next time you come in they will have the Exact Records for Your Car (What Has been done, Type of Oil, Etc.) for you convince.

they do that to register that car in there system so they will know what oil to use and how often you come to there business .there is no reason for them to clone your vin number

I work at a Wal-Mart tire and lube express and we do this same thing with scanning the VIN. Our people do this because of the computer system we use, uses the VIN to make sure we have the right year model vehicle and the correct engine size so that when the vehicle enters the bay area the correct oil filter, air filter, and the right amount of oil gets put into the vehicle.
