Playstation 2 Issue: Discs Sometimes Read, Other Times Don't?

Playstation 2 Issue: Discs Sometimes Read, Other Times Don’t?
Sometimes I’m able to play some old games for my Playstation 2, and other times they won’t read, leaving my Playstation to say Disc Read Error or leaving it to try to read it indefinitely. I’ve the original system, the larger version, the 30k-50k.

I actually think it’s a few different problems.
For one, the disc itself, since it’s not in pristine condition, with a few scratches here and there.
However, sometimes the disc works, and sometimes it doesn’t. If it were that bad, wouldn’t it NEVER work?

Another is that my Playstation 2 is old, really old. I got it about a year after it came out, and I’ve heard that some people have issues with their PS2 laser scanner thing pretty much dies. Maybe that’s it?
I’m pretty sure it’s this problem, because some games read but others don’t sometimes, and sometimes other games work, but the first group of games doesn’t.

The third problem might be the inner system itself, since the system is old, it isn’t exactly in pristine condition either. Most of the vents are caked with dust, and I can’t get it out, I’ve no small, handheld vacuum cleaner or anything.

Is there a way to fix this? Or do I have to get it repaired? Or do I have to buy a whole other system (perhaps discs as well)? Any ideas on what I could try?
Thanks for your time.

Best answer:

yeah! mines the same way. I’ve had it for years and now it can’t read my psx games (black discs). It also can’t read some ps2 games (blue discs) it can only read the clear ps2 discs. Try opening up the system and cleaning the inside it worked for me.

You can try and clean the lens with a cotton bud, slightly dumped in a rubbing alcohol. If this won’t help – may be the lens needs to get replaced.
